Is my boiler's pressure too low?

Did you know that if the pressure in your central heating system falls too low, your boiler will shut down and not be able to work properly? The pressure in your boiler can drop for a variety of causes, ranging from leaks to boiler component problems. Read this blog post to read some of the most common reasons why your boiler's pressure might be too low.

When your central heating is operating well, you probably don't think twice about your boiler. It provides crucial heat and hot water to your house, keeping you and your family warm and cosy all year, and most of us take it for granted that it will function as it should, whenever we need it. However, boilers (particularly older models) are known to frequently break down or show signs of needing repair if not properly maintained and serviced on a regular basis.

Why the pressure of your boiler is so important

Boilers have various intricate parts that work together to make your central heating system perform at the appropriate level, and in order to work efficiently and reliably, all of your boiler's various components must work properly or the performance of your radiators and hot water will be negatively affected. The pressure in your boiler is a crucial component that might fluctuate at times. The pressure in your boiler may have a big influence on the operation of your central heating system, so be sure it's set correctly.

How do you check the pressure of your boiler?

The pressure gauge connected to a screen on the boiler with an error code will indicate if the pressure is too high or too low. A boiler must operate within a specific temperature range in order to function successfully and securely. This temperature range is typically between 0.7 and 2.5 bar. If the pressure consistently falls below the permissible limit, it may typically be replaced with a system valve. It is also critical to know that if your boiler has lost pressure, pumping up the water will only provide a temporary solution. Ideally, the pressure should be between 1.0-1.5 bar when cold.

What do I do if my boiler's pressure is too low?

If your boiler is below 1.0 bar when cold, then it is too low. But fear not, it is actually possible to repressurise your boiler by yourself. Find the filling loop; some are built into the boiler (never remove the casing from the appliance) and some are external. Locate the filling loop, open the valve, and refill your heating system. We advise that you should always check your boiler's manual for specific instructions on repressurising your boiler.
