What Is Involved in a Gas Safety Check?

Gas Safety Checks were established as a legal precaution to help individuals protect themselves against carbon monoxide poisoning in their homes. A Gas Safety Check is essential for protecting the residents of your house if you are a homeowner or a landlord. Every year, homeowners are highly encouraged to have a Gas Safety Check performed in their homes, and landlords are legally compelled to have one performed in the houses they rent out.

Most of us would be lost without our gas appliances, and we don't even think about them when they're running properly and safely. It needs to be said that there is a possible threat it poses to you and your family. This is because there is a chance of a carbon monoxide leak if one of your appliances fails or if something isn't linked properly. Carbon monoxide is an extremely deadly and hazardous gas. Its effects can range from sleepiness to death, but because it is colourless and odourless, you will be unable to detect a leak.

What Happens in a Gas Safety Check?

A Gas Safe registered engineer performs the following inspections during a Gas Safety Check:

  • All gas appliances' heat input and pressure. This is to ensure that they are operating at their best.
  • The flue or chimney that connects your boiler or gas burner to the outside. These are necessary to keep you or your renters safe by allowing gas fumes to exit the premises.
  • The gas appliance's setup, such as ensuring that your boiler is properly installed, connected, and burning as it should.
  • The air supply: ensure that the air supply to each device is adequate, as gas requires it to burn cleanly and efficiently.
  • To check that the safety devices are in excellent working order.

Who should conduct a gas safety inspection?

A skilled and qualified engineer with the necessary abilities and experience working with gas appliances must conduct a Gas Safety Check. Otherwise, the check would be worthless and will not protect your property or family.

A Gas Safety inspection should only be performed by a Gas Safe qualified heating engineer. Being Gas Safe registered demonstrates an engineer's skills and expertise, and employing someone without it puts your safety in danger and renders the check legally void.
