What size boiler is best for my home?

If you choose the wrong boiler for your home, you could end up with poor central heating and water performance for years to come. That's why East Midlands Boiler Servicing have identified exactly how you can choose the right boiler for your property.

 Sizing your new boiler

The kilowatt output of the boiler is referred to as boiler size (kW). In general, the greater the kilowatts, the more heat and hot water you require. Previously, previous boiler types were pre-condensing boilers, which were incredibly inefficient, therefore oversizing your boiler was a wonderful method to compensate for any heat loss.

However, with today's newer, more energy-efficient boilers, oversizing might potentially wind up costing you extra money on top of your monthly gas costs! That is why we recommend not oversizing your boiler. Is your present boiler enough for your needs?

Is your boiler good enough for your current hot water requirements?

For example, do you frequently run out of hot water? Is it taking too long for your house to heat up? Is someone leaving your residence in the near future? And then ask yourself if you would be satisfied if you replaced your boiler with a straight replacement knowing what you know today. If not, you should probably think about downsizing your boiler to fit your existing requirements.

Demand for hot water

Nowadays, combi boiler systems are used in the majority of homes. They merge all of the old water tanks and holding tanks into a single, compact system that is usually seen in the kitchen. They deliver heat and hot water directly from the mains and are practical and reasonably priced to use in smaller dwellings (with one bathroom). However, these boilers are inefficient for bigger homes with more than one bathroom. If you have a big family and/or two bathrooms, you should think about upgrading your boiler to a larger system, most likely a traditional boiler system with hot water tanks to ensure you always have adequate hot water.

Count your radiators

How many radiators are there in your house? A typical 3-4 bedroom house will contain around 10 radiators. In most circumstances, a 24-30kw combi boiler is enough. Larger homes with additional radiators or an en-suite bathroom often require a boiler with a power range of 30-35kw. If you have a larger property with 3+ bathrooms and 15-20+ radiators, you should look at a 35-42 kw combi boiler or switch to a typical system boiler. If your present boiler is less than the necessary kw, you should probably consider enlarging it.

Are you planning on extending your home?

It's a good idea to consider any future additions or modifications to your home when choosing a boiler. For example, if you’re thinking about adding more bathrooms or rooms sometime in the future, it’s best to choose the right boiler size now. This helps you avoid the hassle of having to upgrade to a larger boiler later on.

How insulated is your home?

The insulation and heat loss in your house must be evaluated to choose the right boiler size. Smaller boilers make sense for well-insulated homes with less heat loss since they can retain heat more effectively. However, a larger boiler might be required in older or inadequately insulated dwellings to make up for heat loss. If you need to lower your heating requirements and possibly make room for a smaller, more affordable boiler, think about upgrading your insulation.

Fuel Type

Think about the kind of fuel you intend to use for your boiler. Natural gas is the most widely used fuel in the UK, although there are other fuels as well, including oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and even renewable energy sources like heat pumps and biomass boilers.

Your choice should be determined by the fuel types that are available in your location, their cost, and their effects on the environment. This decision may have an impact on the size of your boiler because different fuel types may call for different boiler models.
